In the wide grasslands where the wind danced with the tall yellow grass, lived a young buffalo named Bill. He had big strong legs, little curved horns, and the kindest heart in the whole herd. But there was one thing about Buffalo Bill — he was scared of crossing the river.
Every year, the buffalo herd crossed the river to reach greener fields. The water wasn’t deep, but it flowed fast and made a loud whooshing noise that frightened Bill. He would always stand at the edge, watching the others splash through, but never brave enough to follow.
“Come on, Bill!” his friends would call. “You can do it!”
But Bill would shake his head and stay behind, chewing grass alone and missing the fun adventures on the other side.
One sunny day, as the herd prepared to cross again, a tiny voice piped up beside Bill. It was Pip, a little prairie mouse who had made a nest in Bill’s fur.
“You know,” Pip squeaked, “I’m much smaller than you. And I’m going to cross that river on a floating leaf.”
Bill blinked. “A leaf? But what if it sinks?”
Pip stood tall on his tiny legs. “Then I’ll learn to swim! You see, being brave isn’t about not being scared. It’s about trying even when you are scared.”
Bill thought about that. He looked at the river. The water still rushed. It still roared. But suddenly, with Pip’s courage in his heart, it didn’t seem quite so big.
So Buffalo Bill took a deep breath. He stepped into the water.
At first, the cold water swirled around his hooves. But he kept going — one step, two steps, then more. His legs were strong, his heart steady. And before he knew it, he was on the other side, greeted with cheers from the whole herd!
“You did it, Bill!” they shouted.
Bill smiled, water dripping from his fur. Pip popped out from his ear and squeaked, “Told you!”
From that day on, Buffalo Bill was no longer afraid. He crossed rivers, climbed hills, and helped others take their own brave steps too.
Moral of the Story:
True bravery isn’t the absence of fear — it’s trying even when you’re scared. Even the biggest rivers can be crossed with a little courage.
