The morning sunlight spilled through the tall windows of Lisa’s bedroom, dancing in golden stripes across her colorful quilt. On the pillow beside her sat a small, brown teddy bear with bright eyes and green overalls, one strap dangling loose from a missing button. This was Corduroy, Lisa’s best friend and most adventurous companion.
Lisa stretched and yawned, rubbing her eyes as she turned to Corduroy. “Good morning, Corduroy,” she whispered with a smile. “Guess what? Today we’re going somewhere special!”
Corduroy’s little heart leapt with excitement. He always loved Lisa’s surprises. He tilted his fuzzy head, as if to ask, “Where?”
Lisa giggled and leaned close. “We’re going to the zoo!”
Corduroy could hardly believe his stitched ears. The zoo! A place filled with animals of all shapes and sizes. He had heard Lisa talk about lions, elephants, penguins, and giraffes before, but he had never seen them with his own button eyes.

Chapter One: The Journey Begins
Lisa packed a small backpack with snacks, a water bottle, and a camera. She carefully tucked Corduroy inside so he could peek out the top.
“Ready?” Lisa’s mom called from the doorway.
“Ready!” Lisa chirped, holding Corduroy tight.
The car ride to the zoo felt like an adventure all by itself. Corduroy watched out the window as trees, buildings, and people zoomed past. He wondered if the animals at the zoo liked riding in cars too—or if they had their own ways of traveling. Maybe elephants had their own buses, or giraffes stretched their necks so high that they could see everything from above.
Lisa squeezed Corduroy’s paw. “You’re going to love the zoo,” she whispered. “There are animals from all around the world. We’ll take lots of pictures.”
Corduroy’s button eyes sparkled. He was ready.

Chapter Two: Welcome to the Zoo
At last, the car pulled into a big parking lot. Excited children hopped out of cars, parents carried strollers, and the air buzzed with laughter. Corduroy spotted a giant sign shaped like a lion’s head. It said: Welcome to the City Zoo!
Lisa and her mom walked up to the entrance gate, where a friendly zookeeper in a khaki uniform greeted them. She handed Lisa a colorful map covered in pictures of animals and pathways.
“Don’t forget to visit the new butterfly garden,” the zookeeper said. “It just opened today.”
Lisa grinned. “Thank you! We will.”
Corduroy peeked at the map. So many places to explore! The lion habitat, the monkey forest, the penguin pool, the elephant plains, and—best of all—the giraffe feeding station.

Chapter Three: The Lion’s Roar
The first stop was the lion exhibit. Corduroy could hear a deep, rumbling sound long before they reached the enclosure.
“Roarrr!”
Lisa gasped. “That’s the lions!” she whispered.
Corduroy peeked through the railings. There, lying in the warm sun, was a mighty lion with a golden mane. His eyes were half-closed, but when he yawned, Corduroy could see his sharp white teeth.
A smaller lion cub bounded across the grass, tumbling and playing with a stick. Corduroy’s little paws itched—he wanted to play too!
“Do you think lions play tag like we do?” Corduroy wondered silently.
Lisa whispered, as if reading his thoughts, “They’re just like big cats. They love to play.”
Corduroy gave a tiny nod. Maybe one day he could play tag with a lion cub.

Chapter Four: Monkey Mischief
Next, Lisa and Corduroy followed the path to the monkey forest. The air was filled with chattering, squeaking, and the rustling of leaves.
Corduroy’s button eyes grew wide as he saw monkeys swinging from ropes and branches, their long tails curling and uncurling like springs.
One cheeky monkey swung close to the viewing window, pressed his hands against the glass, and made a funny face. Lisa laughed so hard she nearly dropped her backpack.
Corduroy smiled too. He liked these playful monkeys. But just then, one of them spotted Lisa’s snack bag through the mesh fence.
The monkey tilted its head, pointed at the bag, and clapped its hands.
“Oh no,” Lisa whispered. “He wants my crackers!”
Corduroy thought quickly. He gave the monkey a polite wave, as if to say, “Sorry, no snacks for you.” The monkey chattered, but then swung away, looking for something else to do.
Lisa patted Corduroy. “Good thinking, Corduroy. You saved my crackers.”
Corduroy beamed with pride.

Chapter Five: Penguins and Popsicles
The penguin pool was next. Cool air brushed against Lisa’s cheeks as they stepped into the chilly enclosure. Penguins waddled across the rocks, slipping and sliding into the icy water with joyful splashes.
Corduroy giggled silently. Penguins were like little people in tuxedos, always in a hurry. He pressed his nose against the glass and watched them swim gracefully, like tiny rockets underwater.
Lisa licked a popsicle her mom had bought from a stand. “Look, Corduroy,” she whispered. “Penguins love the cold, just like this popsicle.”
Corduroy nodded. He imagined sharing a popsicle with a penguin—though the penguin would probably gobble it up in one big bite.

Chapter Six: Elephant Parade
The ground rumbled beneath their feet as Lisa and Corduroy approached the elephant plains. Enormous gray elephants marched slowly across the field, their trunks swaying and ears flapping like giant fans.
Corduroy gasped. He had never seen such big animals before! One elephant sprayed water into the air with its trunk, showering the others in a sparkling mist.
Lisa clapped her hands. “Look, Corduroy! They’re giving each other a bath.”
Corduroy reached out as if he could feel the cool mist himself. He wondered if elephants liked bubbles, the way Lisa did in her bath.

Chapter Seven: Giraffe Giggles
Finally, they reached the giraffe feeding station. A tall wooden platform let visitors stand at the giraffes’ eye level. Lisa’s mom bought a bundle of lettuce leaves, and Lisa held one out carefully.
A giraffe bent its long neck down, its big eyes gentle and curious. With a flick of its tongue, it snatched the lettuce right out of Lisa’s hand.
Lisa giggled. “That tickles!”
Corduroy leaned forward from her backpack, stretching out his little paw. To his amazement, the giraffe noticed him. It bent down and gave Corduroy’s overalls a gentle sniff.
Corduroy’s button eyes twinkled. He had made a new friend.

Chapter Eight: The Butterfly Garden
Their last stop was the brand-new butterfly garden. The moment they stepped inside, Corduroy felt as though they had entered a magical world. Bright flowers blossomed everywhere, and colorful butterflies floated through the air like living jewels.
Lisa gasped. “It’s beautiful.”
Corduroy reached out a paw, and a golden butterfly landed gently on his arm. It fluttered its wings softly, as if whispering a secret only Corduroy could hear.
Lisa snapped a picture with her camera. “Perfect,” she said. “Now we’ll always remember this.”
Corduroy smiled. The butterfly tickled his fur before it lifted off and soared back into the flowers.

Chapter Nine: A Sleepy Ride Home
The sun began to set as Lisa and her mom headed back to the car. Corduroy felt warm and happy inside. He had seen lions, monkeys, penguins, elephants, giraffes, and even made friends with a butterfly.
Lisa cuddled him close during the car ride home. “Did you have fun today, Corduroy?” she whispered.
Corduroy, though he could not speak, felt his stitched heart swell. If he could talk, he would have said, “It was the best adventure ever.”
As the car hummed along, Corduroy’s button eyes grew heavy. He drifted off to sleep, dreaming of lions that played tag, penguins that shared popsicles, and giraffes that gave gentle kisses.

Chapter Ten: Sweet Dreams
That night, back in Lisa’s cozy bedroom, Corduroy rested on his special spot by her pillow. Lisa gave him a goodnight hug.
“Thank you for coming to the zoo with me, Corduroy,” she whispered. “You’re the best friend ever.”
Corduroy’s little bear heart glowed with happiness. He knew that no matter how many adventures they had, the best part was always being with Lisa.
And as the moonlight shone softly through the window, Corduroy drifted into dreams of more adventures to come.
